M5.2 Discussion: What is the Buzz About Climate Change and Bees

Instructions: In about 300 words, write your newspaper article addressing these questions:

  1. What is known so far about bee declines (observed population declines and potential causes)?
  2. How might climate change affect bees (and other pollinators)?
  3. How will the decline in bees affect other species and ecosystems, including human-dominated/created ecosystems (i.e., agricultural systems such as crops)?

Search help: Let's start with OneSearch again for this topic! Just like before, think about the main ideas of the assignment and put each main idea into it's own search box in OneSearch's Advanced Search screen. For example:

First box: bee decline
Second box: "climate change"

Search tip: Use quotation marks around the phrase, "climate change," so it is searched exactly as written instead of as two individual words searched separately.

For this discussion, you will write a short and catchy popular science article/story on the effect of climate change on pollinators, focusing on bees. Need help communicating scientific research to the average person? See these resources:

M5.3 Scientific Summary: Climate Change Impact on a Species and Ecosystem

Instructions: Submit a summary of a primary, peer-reviewed article that presents original research results on climate change effects on a specific species or ecosystem that is not more than 10 years old. Note: Do not use the species examples already presented in the required materials for this module.

Search help: Once you choose a species to research, use the same strategy that we did above, but instead of bee decline in the first box, put your chosen species. Keep "climate change" in the second box.

Search tip: We need to limit our results to peer-reviewed articles only that were published within the last 10 years. In OneSearch, look for the peer-reviewed journals checkbox and the date range limiter.
