BIO340: Biodiversity

M3.4 Group Presentation Stakeholder Analysis of Yellowstone Bison & Brucellosis

Instructions: As a group, identify and research the views of the stakeholders related to a conservation case study for the Greater Yellowstone Area Bison and Brucellosis.

Step 1: Review the complete scenario in your course and consider the following questions:

  • Is culling cruel or necessary?
  • What alternatives are there to manage this species?
  • How might different management scenarios impact the stakeholders in the region?

Step 2: Select a stakeholder group from the list in your course.

Step 3: Research the group's stance using credible web resources and library resources. Compose a letter with your group representing the stakeholder's point of view on the current management plan.

Step 4: Respond to other groups' letters (individually)

Search help:

  1. Click on the Switch to Advanced search link in the OneSearch box below to see three search boxes.
  2. Start with a broad overview of the topic to find eBooks, articles, radio transcripts/recordings, and more that will discuss multiple points of view. For example:

First box: "american bison"

Second box: brucellosis

search results for search described above

You can add your chosen stakeholders to the third box to narrow your search, for example:

  • farmer or rancher or landowner
  • "Native American" or trib* or "American Indian"

Search tips:

  • Put phrases in quotation marks so that you're searching the exact phrase, not individual words.
  • Use OR within the same box to find synonyms or when you want results that mention either word.
  • Use the asterisk * at the end of a word to retrieve all possible endings. For example, trib* will retrieve tribe, tribes, tribal, etc.

Next steps:

Use information you find in articles to search the Internet (using a search engine like Google) to find group or government agency websites.

For example, the article titled The Buffalo's Burden by Christopher Ketcham mentions The Buffalo Field Campaign, an environmental advocacy organization working to stop the culling program.

Remember to evaluate your sources carefully, especially those found on the open web.
