LA298: Associate Degree Capstone

Sample Search Strategy: Ethical Dilemmas

You are asked to locate one scholarly source (for example, an article or eBook) from the Excelsior Library that contains an ethical dilemma in a field of your choosing. You are encouraged to choose a field related to your college degree, work, or a profession in which you would like to work. Examples of fields could be nursing, cybersecurity, business, etc.

Use the three search boxes in OneSearch to divide your topic into its main ideas. Put each main idea into its own box along with brainstormed synonyms using OR within the same box.

For example, if you are looking for an example of an ethical dilemma in engineering, your search might look something like this:

"ethical dilemma" OR ethic* (1st search box)
AND engineering (2nd search box)

Search tips:

  • Use the word "OR" within the same box to search for synonyms or similar terms.
  • Use quotation marks around exact phrases of two or more words, such as "ethical dilemma." This tells the database to search for those terms next to each other exactly as written, as opposed to anywhere in the text (far apart/separately).
  • Use the asterisk* symbol to search for all possible endings of a word. In this case, typing ethic* will search for ethic, ethics, ethical, etc.

If you don't immediately see a source that provides an example of an ethical dilemma, you might try adding the term, "case study" to the third search box. Note: You may need to skim through multiple eBooks and articles before finding a source that will work well for this assignment.
