BUS323: Business Ethics

Using Business Research Databases for BUS323

This guide is designed to help you with your research and discussion posts for BUS323, introducing a range of business resources available to you.

First, let's look at an example search strategy about social responsibility in a global context. Below, you'll see a sample search in Business Source Complete for:

  • "social responsibility"
  • international OR global
  • sustainabl*

Notice the four advanced search strategies I've used:

  1. Divide your topic into its main ideas and place each idea into a separate search box. Most advanced search interfaces start with two or three search boxes, but you can always add more for more complex topics. In both EBSCO and ProQuest, click the plus sign symbol to add additional search boxes.
  2. Use quotation marks around phrases of two or more words to tell the database to search for those words right next to one another. Examples, "social responsibility," "developing countries," "hostile work environment," etc.
  3. Use the word OR between synonyms and like-terms to tell the database to search for either term. Examples, "water pollution" OR " illegal dumping."
  4. Use an asterisk (*) at the end of a root word to tell the database to search for all relevant endings to the word. For example, a search for sustainabl* will find results about sustainable and sustainability.

I'd suggest starting your searches in Business Source Complete and Business Databases (ProQuest). Using databases with a business focus will help you narrow your search to more relevant results. Click on a database name to search:
