M5.4 Project Work: Your Species' DNA Research

Examine DNA studies that have been done with your species. Note: your assignment asks you to include DNA studies that have been done on living specimens of your species as well as DNA studies on ancestors or fossils of your species.

Search Strategy

In the Search Tools box (below), click on the Switch to Advanced Search link under the OneSearch box. You will then see 3 search boxes that you can use to divide your topic into its main ideas.

In the top box, type the species you are researching. (Reminder, if it's a two-part name put the name in quotation marks.) Change the drop-down list next to the box from Select a field (optional) to SU Subject terms. This will limit your search to only articles that include the animal as a subject term.

In the second box, type the concept you are searching. Suggested terms include DNA or genomic or gene* Use OR between synonyms within the same box to search for either word. Use the asterisk * anytime a word ending can vary to retrieve all possible endings. For example, this search will return any of the following: DNA, genomic, gene, genes, genetic, genetics, etc.

Here's an example search:

search results for penguins as a subject in first box and dna or genomic or gene* in second box

Read through the articles to see which ones are about DNA studies on living specimens and which are about ancestors/fossils. If you find you are getting too many results, you can always enter these concepts into the third box to narrow down your search. For example, type ancestors or fossils into the third box while keeping the other boxes the same.
