BUS535: Quality & Productivity Methods in the Management of Technology

Using Business Research Databases for BUS535

This guide is designed to help you with your case study for BUS535, introducing a range of business resources available to you.

Below, I've described a couple sample search strategies in the databases Communications & Mass Media Complete and Business Source Complete. To get started, enter Communications & Mass Media Complete by clicking the link below:

First, a sample search strategy to get you started:

  1. Just above the database search boxes where it says "Searching: Communication & Mass Media Complete" click Choose Databases
  2. Add the database Business Source Complete to the search by checking the box next to "Business Source Complete" and clicking OK
  3. In the first search box enter: netflix OR hulu
  4. Notice the advanced search strategy I used to start:
    • Use the word OR between synonyms and like-terms to tell the database to search for either term.
  5. Click Search
  6. Scan your list of results and pay special attention to the "Subjects" listed under each title. You can use these database subject terms to find more results that don't necessarily address these two companies, but discuss their industry more broadly. For example, look at the subject terms listed for this article record:

subject headings

  • You can use these and other relevant subject terms in a second search to find more results.
    • Streaming video
    • Video on demand
    • Internet television

Next, try a second broader search:

  1. Change your search terms to: "streaming video" OR "video on demand" OR "internet television"
  2. Notice the advanced search strategy I used:
    • Use quotation marks around phrases of two or more words to tell the database to search for those words right next to one another.
  3. Click Search

I'd suggest starting your searches in Communications & Mass Media Complete, Business Source Complete, and Business Databases (ProQuest). Using databases with a business or media focus will help you narrow your search to more relevant results. Click on a database name to search:
