Starting Your Research

Form a Thesis

Answer the question with the information you found.

What's a Working Thesis?

A working thesis is a thesis you're open to changing as you continue your research.

A working thesis statement:

  • Directly answers the research question.
  • Can be supported with evidence from your research so far.
  • Is an interpretation, claim, or argument (not just a fact or summary).
  • Can be changed based on new evidence.

Sources First!

It's tempting to form a thesis statement first, then look for evidence to back it up.

But that's more difficult, because the specific evidence you're seeking may not exist! And it can result in a biased paper.

Find sources first, then form a working thesis based on information you found. Revise your thesis as you learn more.

How to Write a Strong Thesis Statement

A thesis statement is a one- or two-sentence answer to your research question that you can support with evidence from your research.
