Adapting, adopting, or remixing an existing textbook or other learning object
Step 1. The Proposal
Complete the Proposal form: ExPress Proposal form and submit to scholarlycommunications@excelsior.edu
The Scholarly Communications Librarian will send you an email with information on creating a Pressbooks login
Step 2. Timeline
This project is anticipated to take 3-6 months to complete
You and the Scholarly Communications Librarian will schedule monthly check in meetings to meet the goals of the project
Step 3. Prepare Your Work
You will receive training in the form of videos and guides on the Pressbooks platform depending on your type of project. Please start here to get the most out of using Pressbooks: Pressbooks User Guide – Simple Book Publishing The Scholarly Communications Librarian will be available to answer any questions
Copy editing, writing, and inputting the work into the Pressbooks is the responsibility of the author. Please be prepared to edit your own work or find a professional editor. The Scholarly Communications Librarian and Instructional Designer can assist with the review. As you work on your project, it will be visible to only you and Pressbooks administrators.
Determine what areas of the textbook you would like to change. Will you change only one chapter? The entire book? Will you add new material and keep other parts of the textbook? See this chapter for more guidelines: What Are the Changes – Adaptation Guide (opentextbc.ca)
Include an attribution statement in the front matter of the book or the copyright page. See examples of attribution statements here: Adaptation Statement – Adaptation Guide (opentextbc.ca)
Determine what images or interactive activities (such as H5P or other assessments) you would like to include
Choose a Creative Commons open license for your work
Step 4. Submit Your Work
When the work is completed in Pressbooks and has undergone a final review from the author’s Executive Dean, the Scholarly Communications Librarian will publish your work and make it live. The work will be made available on the university’s Pressbooks site and the Pressbooks directory. The author has the option to share their work on OER Commons.
Step 5. Post-Submission
Submit your work to Excelsior’s Institutional repository, SOAR. The Scholarly Communications Librarian can also add your work to OER Commons.
