HUM306: Creative Problem Solving

The Runaway Species - author talk with David Eagleman and Anthony Brandt

Choosing a Problem

Module 2 asks you to think of a problem that you're currently facing, "something you care about but don't quite know how to deal with."

Your best bet is to think of a challenge in your professional or personal life. You will also be asked to find a source relating to the historical aspects of your problem later in the course, so keep this in mind when choosing your problem. If you're struggling to choose a problem, try the following tips:

  1. Browse the CQ Researcher database. It contains comprehensive reports on current issues in all types of industries. There are "hot topics" on the right and you can also check out the most recent reports to see what is currently being talked about, which may help give you some ideas!
  2. Do some quick searches in the Library’s OneSearch tool. Scanning the results will give you some ideas about what others have written about your problem, which can help you determine whether or not to focus on it. If you aren't getting any results about the problem you've chosen, then you may not have enough resources to complete your assignment.
  3. Talk with your professor or a librarian. Sometimes, it helps to simply talk about your ideas with someone else. The librarians are happy to chat about your topic with you, provide feedback, and help you get started in the right direction. Please don't hesitate to contact your librarians!
